Dr. McIlwain, a Butler, Alabama native, graduated magna cum laude from The University of Alabama and earned his DMD from UAB School of Dentistry. After practicing general dentistry in Tuscumbia for five years, he completed medical school at Vanderbilt University, surgical training, and an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency. He founded Oral and Facial Surgery of the Shoals in 1992 and has served in numerous professional and community leadership roles, including Chief of Staff at Helen Keller Hospital, President of the Alabama OMFS Society, and President of the Alabama Board of Dental Examiners. He also led the Phil Campbell on-site rescue and triage teams during the 2011 tornado outbreak.
