Dennis G. Pappas, Sr., MD

Dr. Pappas is a Birmingham native who introduced advanced treatments for hearing loss and ear disorders to Alabama. After medical training at the University of Tennessee, otolaryngology residency at New York University, and neurotology fellowship at the House Ear Institute, he returned to Alabama in 1965 as the state’s first otologist. He performed Alabama’s first cochlear implant and founded the ECHO Foundation in 1978 to support children with hearing loss. A collector of rare medical artifacts, Dr. Pappas donated many historic items to UAB’s Lister Hill Library, now preserved in The Dennis Pappas Historical Collections Gallery.
