Betty W. Vaughan, MD
Dr. Vaughan is honored for her continuous efforts to enhance public health services and improve the status of both providers and facilities. A native of Courtland, Alabama, Dr. Vaughn earned her bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Alabama. On July 1, 1967 Dr. Vaughan was named Health Officer for Morgan County. By September 1968 she was serving as the District Medical Director for Cullman, Lawrence, Limestone and Morgan counties. In 1973, Dr. Vaughan became the first woman to receive the William Henry Sanders Award for service in public health above and beyond the call of duty. In 1981, Dr. Vaughan was appointed Assistant State Health Officer for Public Health Area One comprised of 12 North Alabama counties.
The Alabama Public Health Association, the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International, DAR, PACT, and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama have all recognized her career of dedicated service. After 31 years, Dr. Vaughan has retired from the Alabama Department of Public Health but continues to serve her profession and community through numerous volunteer activities.
