Margaret Millsap

Margaret Millsap, EdD, RN*

Dr. Margaret Millsap began her education in 1945 receiving her diploma from the Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing, later receiving her B.S and M.S. in Nursing, and her doctorate in education at the University of Alabama. Dr. Millsap’s more than 40 year career took her from a bedside nurse to one of Alabama’s premier nurse educators and leaders. Dr. Millsap was instrumental in the merger of the Birmingham Baptist School of Nursing with the new Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing at Samford University. Dr. Millsap continued her education career as a Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing and was the founding director of the Birmingham Southern College School of Nursing.

Dr. Millsap served as President of essentially every major nursing organization in the State of Alabama, including the Alabama League for Nursing, the Alabama State Nurses Association and the Alabama Board of Nursing. Dr. Millsap was the first woman and the first nurse to serve on the Alabama Board of Health. As an advocate for children with special needs, Dr. Millsap was committed to improving the quality of nursing education and health care for the developmentally disabled.
